What is the Equipment Needed to Trap a Groundhog?
There are different types of traps available to capture a groundhog. Prior to selecting a trap you should be aware as to
what traps are available and how they are used.
Groundhog Trap – this type of trap is used for the entrance of where the groundhog is coming and going.
These traps have been used for several years and have proven to be effective. The trap has a 14 to 16 inch opening and is
large enough to comfortably accommodate 2 groundhogs. This trap is available anywhere where they sell traps.
One of the simplest traps to put together and use is landscape fencing with are landscape fencing with plastic.
This requires 2 tools to put together and they are a mallet and staples. The materials are flexible and elastic.
You will only need 2 by 24 feet. To assemble merely arrange the stakes. In order to arrange the stakes you will need to
look for pictures or go to a store such as Home Depot to be provided with exact assembly instructions.
When using traps it is always more effective to use a bait. Some of the best baits would be lettuce, string beans, peas
or vanilla extract. There are specific ways to bait. A one-door trap requires baiting goes in the back of the trap.
A two-door trap the bait should be placed in the middle. The trap should be placed 3 feet from the burrow and the bait
should be placed at the mouth of the burrow. Groundhogs are notorious for digging underneath the garden fence; the best
equipment for this problem is the use of landscaping fencing. Construct a 4-sided trap that has been reinforced by the
fencing. Be sure to leave a whole for the entering into the garden, once the groundhog decides to leave, the trap door
will close behind the groundhog. One of the important steps is to camouflage the trap with greenery.
There are several types of equipment that can be used to trap a groundhog. You can buy a trap or construct one
of the better types yourself. It is important to determine where you are going to let the groundhog go. Equipment
for trapping groundhogs is easily accessible and reasonably priced. Traps are also the most effective way of removing
groundhogs from your property. This may be a timely effort but it does work.
