Are Skunks Dangerous to Cats, Dogs, or Other Pets?

Skunks are nothing new in the rural Bradenton areas and even in the suburban places. These carnivorous animals are labelled as pests for posing risk to our pets and ruining the nice vegetable patch outside the yard. If you live in the city, you probably have at least encountered a skunk in your garden. But do you know the serious danger it brings to your Florida household and also to your cats and dogs?

Gasping for some air
A Bradenton skunk comes from the family of Mustelidae, a carnivorous type of animal that somehow resembles the ferrets. However, Florida skunks are basically known for their nasty secretions coming from the anal glands, which they can actually spray from a distance.

• Noxious smell
• Non poisonous
• Contains sulfur acid
• Can cause respiratory problem
• Can cause eye irritation
• Can irritate mucous membranes

Relatively smelly creatures
What makes Bradenton skunks different from ferret is their ability to control those horrible secretions by spraying. Ferrets on the other hand goes through some sort of de-scenting procedure before being sold at the pet shop.

Rabies vs Bad odour
Skunks are also carriers of rabies although you don’t just get it through their spray, faeces or urine. This only happens when a skunk has bitten your dog that isn’t protected with any anti-rabies vaccine. Thus, it is better to make sure that your pets are vaccinated so they will be out of danger. Here are more of the infectious diseases in which Florida skunks are known for.

• Baylisascariscolumnaris (ROUND WORM)
• Round worm can lead to ocular damage (contact with infected faeces)
• Baylisascaris can pose serious brain damage (to your pet)
• Skunks are notorious flea carrying creatures

On close encounters
Cats and dogs can get curious with a Bradenton skunk so instead of avoiding them at all costs, they even play with them. In the end, your pet could get sprayed between the eyes, over their noses and who knows where. On that case, if you ever kissed your dog and happen to smell something horrible, then some skunk may have sprayed something to your pet earlier.

Think you’re missing something?
You may have seen one of your neighbours with a pet Florida skunk. So what’s the deal? It is not advisable to have a pet skunk at home because they are nocturnal creatures. Unless you are often wide awake at night, then you have to shower it with lots and lots of serious attention. If they don’t get this, they can become such a nuisance because they can open closets, drawers, refrigerators, drawers and even doors. You don’t want that, do you?
